Have you seen a lot of turquoise this past year? It was the color of 2010, so look for pink in the coming months as Pantone has chosen Honeysuckle Pink as the color of 2011. They describes it as: “A color for all seasons. Courageous. Confident. Vital. A brave new color, for a brave new world. Let the bold spirit of Honeysuckle infuse you, lift you and carry you through the year. It’s a color for every day – with nothing ‘everyday’ about it”. (That press statement is mildly funny, please let me know if you face the “brave new world” with pink.) Please don't say mauve!

The color combination of pink and green have been around a long time- think of Lily Pulitzer and Kate Spade!

The combination of the white with the
honeysuckle in the Kate Spade dress cools down the palette while the green shown in Lily Pulitzer papers still feels hot.

Black with it is very retro and fun- think zebra stripes, patent leather in black or white and honeysuckle.

The designers that have always worked in this hues are Johnathan Alder and the duo of Diamond Baratta Design. This is their Tiburon fabric for Lee Jofa below in the pink and orange combo- which I love!

Do you see honeysuckle in your future? It's quite a shift from the the turquoises and grays of past years and wants to offer a glimmer of hope and promise. You can't help but be uplifted when you see this fun shade.

The dialogue between black and white design elements continues in the library. The ebony enameled bookshelves, black enameled ceiling, and dark hardwood floor make a unified statement without enclosing the space. The ivory walls, ivory window coverings, and blond sisal carpeting balance the ebony envelope. The silhouettes of the off white furnishings and accessories, plus the patterns of the black and white works of art and the zebra skin rug punctuate the space.

In the master bedroom suite, designed by Jay Jeffers, nothing is lost in translation. Instead of tile from AKDO, the bathroom features tile from Ann Sacks, another showhouse sponsor. A wall of pietra dura tile, in a Gothic tracery pattern of grey, taupe, and white marble, determines the design vocabulary for the master bathroom.

As does the gray marble fireplace. The ottoman in front of the fireplace is upholstered in custom appliqued and embroidered fabric by Holland & Sherry, a direct translation of the tracery pattern. Even the silhouettes of the handles on the Swedish Biedermeier stools at the foot of the bed recall the Gothic design.

But, the story isn't over yet! Willem Racke Studio hand painted the ceiling of the bedroom in a tonal Neoclassical design, inspired by 18th century Scottish architect Robert Adam. But, you need to read between the lines to understand the poetry! The central medallion of the octagonal grid pattern mirrors the shadows cast by the eight-arm chandelier. And, the running chain pattern on the octagonal banding alludes to decorative molding.

According to historian Holland Lynch, who co-curated Chinoiserie: Rococo to Eco along with Maria Santangelo of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, 'Chinoiserie's popularity through the centuries is due, in large part, to its residing in the realm of fantasy, for it is evocative rather than innovative in its approach to style.'

The furniture, ceramics, and textiles filling the display cases of the exhibition featured fantastic Asian designs, including exotic buildings, flowers, or birds, and imitated rare Asian materials, such as lacquer, silk, or porcelain.

Even though the visual presentation, text panels, exhibition labels, and exhibition catalog were of museum quality, I wish that one of the most important pieces in the exhibition, the table from the Chinese Bedroom at Badminton House, on loan from the San Francisco collection of Malcolm D. Gutter, was displayed in context, under The Golden Age of Chinoiserie text panel, which described this famous 18th century Chinese bedroom.

English furniture lovers could hardly imagine a finer provenance.

Or, a more renowned London workshop than that of William and John Linnell, whose furniture designs, according to the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, rival those of Thomas Chippendale.

Even though Ann Getty and Associates loaned two outstanding pairs of Chinese Chippendale chairs to the exhibition, wouldn't it have also been amazing to reunite the table with the pair of chairs from the Chinese Bedroom at Badminton House that are also part of the Getty collection?

I have an Asian art background, so I immediately associated the verre eglomise beauties with the Screen of 12 Beauties, commissioned by Chinese emperor Yongzheng (r. 1722-1735) for his study in the private quarters of the Old Summer Palace (Yuan Ming Yuan) in Beijing while he was still a prince. The 12 panels of the screen portray imaginary beauties at leisure, drinking tea, enjoying nature, reading, or appreciating antiquities.

The Screen of 12 Beauties is not only an important visual and historical document of Qing dynasty (1644-1911) court costumes, but also of the architecture of the Old Summer Palace, before it was redesigned by Jesuit missionaries in the style of 18th century European palaces for the Qianlong emperor (r. 1735-1796), who was fascinated by Western science, art, and architecture.

An exhibition and lecture series accompanies the San Francisco Fall Antiques Show, which runs from October 28-31. Chinoiserie: Rococo to Eco, the 2010 exhibition, explores Asian design influences on European fine and decorative arts and furnishings. Highlights of the exhibition, including objects on loan from the collections of Ann Getty and the Fine Arts Museums San Francisco, include a mid 18th century table made by the workshop of William and John Linnell for the Chinese bedroom at Badminton House, an English country estate in Gloucestershire, UK, owned by the Dukes of Beaufort since the late 17th century. Other furniture from the Chinese bedroom, including the Badminton bed, is now in the collection of London's Victoria & Albert Museum.

Guest speakers at Chinoiserie Chic, the 2010 lecture series, include David Beevers, keeper of the Royal Pavilion, the Brighton, UK seaside retreat that architect John Nash remodeled for George IV from 1787-1823. The Royal Pavilion houses some of the finest examples of Chinoiserie in the UK. Designer Saturday lecture features New York interior designer Bunny Williams, and Adam Lewis, who recently published a biography of interior design icon Billy Baldwin.

Bathrooms are at the top of the list for home remodeling projects in 2010.

With the current trends in bathroom remodeling, there is something for everyone, no matter what the budget is. If you haven't been in to Ann Sacks recently, they just launched "AS Basics", an new line of tiles at "economy friendly" suggested retail prices of under $12.00 per square foot. Likewise, Robern just launched a new "builder" line that is also very reasonably priced.

From tub changes, to “borrowing space” from an adjacent closet, to fresh paint and new lighting, a dated bathroom can always be improved.

Suitability

A good place for you and your client to begin is by evaluating the value of their home. A remodeling project shouldn't be so extravagant that it overwhelms the underlying property value! The National Association of Home Builders suggests that when all other factors are equal, an additional half bathroom increases the value of a home by 10.5%, and an additional full bathroom increases the value by 20%. New bathrooms recoup approximately 60% of the initial investment within the first year of completion. But, it may take up to five years to recoup the full expense of a major remodel.

Once you and your client have decided to move ahead with the project, it’s time to set a budget based on the homeowner's finances, and the suitability of the remodeling project for the home. After the budget has been agreed upon, the design process can begin!

Lighting
Layered lighting is important irregardless of the style of the project. Did you ever hold a flashlight under your chin in a dark room as a child? The same ghoulish effect occurs in reverse (top down) in a bathroom that is illuminated with a single overhead light! Who needs to look like they have dark circles under their eyes? Side sconces by the mirror(s) serve as flattering task lights. Halogen lamps are the best type of lamps for sconces. The color of halogen light is the closest to daylight, so the appearance of cosmetics is similar to what others see. Accent lighting can add a “pop” of personality to the room. General ambient lighting should be controlled by dimmers, which are flexible and energy efficient. However, building codes often restrict the use of low efficacy lamps, such as halogen or incandescent, in bathrooms, even if they are controlled by dimmers. So, employing motion or vacancy sensors instead of dimmers could free the designer from these limitations.

Ventilation
In recent years, ventilation has gotten much more sophisticated. Better fans and combination fan/light units are whisper quiet. And, the units can be purchased with humidity driven switching or motion detector actuated night lights. To determine what size of fan your project requires, simply divide the cubic footage of the bathroom by 5. In this case, bigger is not necessarily better, because an exhaust fan that is too powerful could pull more air out of the bathroom than can enter. This could make the fan overheat, make it less efficient, or make it noisier.

Sinks and Faucets
Sinks and faucets are the "eye candy" of a bathroom. Both are now available in a wide variety of specialty finishes. Even though toilet flushing plungers are not yet available in some finishes, the handles could always be re-plated to match the finish of the faucets for an additional cost.

Toilets
Comfort height toilets are increasingly popular, and are no longer only considered for ADA projects. And, the styling has vastly improved! For example, the Kohler "Persuade" toilet not only has contemporary styling, but also is dual flush. In-wall tank toilets, which make marvelous use of small spaces, are another option to consider.

Bathtubs
It is generally accepted that home buyers like a house to have at least one bathtub. So, this should be a consideration when planning a bathroom remodeling project. Now, hydrotherapy whirlpool tubs are gaining popularity over traditional water jet tubs. Hydrotherapy tubs give a more soothing, vibrating massage, while water jet tubs give a more vigorous, pulsating massage. Hydrotherapy tubs are considered more sanitary than water jet tubs because the water does not remain standing in the internal pipes when the tub is not being used. And, the new infinity edged tubs with overflow drain systems are amazing!

Shower Heads
If you are installing multiple shower heads in your remodeled bathroom, such as a combination of rain showers, hand held showers, or body sprays, consider completing the installation by the end of 2010. A new building code goes into effect on January 1, 2011 that requires using valves, which can only activate one water emitter at a time.

Fireplaces
For a really luxurious and romantic element, consider adding a fireplace to the bathroom! Today's direct vent gas fireplaces are economical and easy to install. Since direct vent gas fireplaces do not require a chimney, they can be vented through a wall or through the roof. The direct vent operates not only by drawing combustion air, but also by venting to the outside atmosphere. So, direct vent fireplaces don't consume warm air from inside the house, or compete with the furnace or other appliances for combustion air. Plus, direct venting eliminates the heat loss and the drafts associated with other types of fireplaces. How better to make your bathroom toasty?

A Glossary of Decorative Window Treatments

There are many types of treatments that can decorate the top of a window.

Swags and Jabots
The most formal, traditional, and elegant windows are often draped with swags and jabots at the top of the window. A single swag might be draped across the top of a shorter window, or multiple swags might be draped across the top of a longer window or a group of windows. The soft, gathered swoops of the swag might be accentuated with passementerie (gimp, cord, beads, fringe or braid), or crowned at each point along the top with fabric rosettes or another detail. The jabots, which are the tails that cascade down on each side, frame the window with S-shaped or zigzag folds. Often, the jabots are lined with contrasting fabric, or are edged with passementerie for greater emphasis.

Valences
Valences are the soft fabric treatments at the top of a window. Valances serve the practical purpose of concealing the mechanical hardware on the window treatments. Valances can extend the height of a window, filling the awkward space below the ceiling and above the window. The height of the valances should be in proportion with the window height and the ceiling height. A good guideline is to start with a standard valance height of 14 inches, and to adjust the proportions from there. If the window is wide, making the valences larger will make the ceiling look lower. If the room is long and narrow, making the valences wider than the windows, so that the curtains pull all the way back to the window jambs, will make the room look wider.

Cornices
Like valances, cornices conceal the drapery hardware, and provide a decorative element at the top of windows that gives them a more finished appearance. While valances are soft, essentially a short curtain, cornices are hard. Cornices are usually made from wood that is painted or covered with fabric, or from fabric that is stiffened with buckram. Buckram is a coarse cotton that has been stiffened with glue or sizing. Cornices are usually rectangular, although they might also have a shaped edge, which adds a more architectural element.

Lambrequins
Like cornices, lambrequins are often made from a firm board covered with fabric. In addition to a shaped edge, lambrequins have "tails" that extend partway down the sides of the window.

Pleats
There are many types of pleats, so depending on the style, the effect can be either formal or casual. Essentially, the pleats add fullness to the drapery panels. A good guideline is for the total width of the fabric to be 2 1/2 to 3 times greater than the width of the area to be covered.

Fabric
Fabric is the single most important element in a drapery's overall appearance, construction and style. It is essential to choose a fabric that will drape well, that will hold its shape, and is the right weight for the desired style. In a period or traditional room, it is often nice to also use an under drapery, which adds another layer of pattern or texture. Or, you could use a faux under drapery, attached to each side panel.

Linings

Although sunlight filtering through unlined curtains can be pretty, most draperies, with the exception of sheers, should be lined to protect the fabric, to block light when desired, to help retain the shape, and to extend the life. Use a lightweight lining for draperies that puddle at the bottom. For a billowy look, use a lightweight lining and only attach it at the sides, and not at the bottom, so it will fill with air and move. Specialty linings, such as blackout lining, provide complete darkness when desired.

Interlinings
It is important that the weight of the interlining be suitable for the weight of the face fabric and the style of the drapery. Designers of thick, luxurious draperies often use bump, which is a heavier, blanket-like cotton or flannel interlining that also provides insulation. An interior designer can advise you regarding the fabric, lining, and interlining that is best suited to your style of draperies.

Tiebacks
When should you use tiebacks or holdbacks, and when should drapery panels hang straight? It depends on the overall look you're trying to achieve, how much of the window and the view you want to see, and the amount of space available on either side of the window for the drapery panels to stack when they are open. Tiebacks are often used in more formal or traditional settings, or conversely, for country-style draperies. Straight panels look right in a cleaner, more modern setting. Both new and old houses often have very pretty windows that homeowners don't want to obscure, so tiebacks can be used to reveal more of the glass.

A Kohler Retreat

I've just returned from a three day adventure to the Village of Kohler, Wisconsin, the home of Kohler Plumbing.
I was one of about 18 California designers treated to an informative tour of the Kohler facilities.

We visited the cast iron factory (that produces tubs, sinks and various commercial machinery parts) and the vitreous china factory (that produces toilets and sinks).
I found both tours fascinating.

We even saw the casting process, in which molten iron is poured into various forms.
That wasn't too surprising, but the real surprise is how the end items are colorized.
The iron piece is heated to 2700 degrees, and then a coat of powder is applied with a device that looks like a flour strainer.
The powder that falls on the iron piece doesn't have any color initially, but as the piece cools, the color comes up!

Casting itself is also interesting to observe, apart from the powder coating aspect.
As you might imagine, it takes a negative form to manufacture the vitreous china end product, and to get it a positive "pattern" is pressed into loose sand, which then is the basis for the negative form.

Our group was also shown sneak previews of new products, but no photos were allowed!

Kohler's three story design center was filled with vignettes of bathrooms and kitchens created by designers from all over the country.
Kohler owns the upscale plumbing company Kallista, as well as the modestly priced Sterling line.

Our Carriage House Hotel was beautiful and furnished in Baker and McGuire furniture, companies that are also part of the Kohler corporate family (along with Ann Sacks).
We were offered a marvelous massage at Kohler's world class spa, which boasted every pampering amenity one could imagine.
They treated us especially well when meal times arrived. The beef Wellington hors d' oeuvres were unforgettable!

A Kohler Toilet Primer

Kohler makes four types of toilets.

We are all familiar with the single flush gravity feed toilet. In addition, Kohler now makes a dual flush gravity feed toilet that uses only 0.8 gallons of water for liquid waste and 1.6 gallons for solid waste. Most residences would use one or the other of these toilets. For a "never plug" toilet necessary in commercial applications they have two additional options. The Pressure Lite toilet uses the street water pressure to activate a sealed canister which acts as a power booster to eliminate waste. The Power Lite toilet has an even more aggressive system. An electric motor pressurizes a canister to activate the flush. This type of toilet has a very sleek, "tank-less" look as exemplified by the Hatbox toilet.

Measuring Up to the Job

It seems in every one of our projects we are asked many questions about the "right" height or placement of lighting and art. There really isn't one specific answer but I do follow guidelines so things are comfortable and pleasing to the eye. Please use these as a starting point not just the hard and fast rules.

Chandeliers look best 33-36" above the table no matter the ceiling height.

The formula to begin to know what minimum size of fixture is best for your space is to take the width of the room in feet times 2 and convert this number to inches.

Wall sconces should be no less than 68" off the floor. If they are in a hallway and have shades be sure they are high enough so the light doesn't shine directly in someones eyes.

Fireplace mantels vary widely as do the recommendations of where to add sconces. The 68" above the floor is a good place to start. If your fireplace is very wide they should be hung over both ends not in the wall spaces beyond the mantel.

Bedrooms pose their own set of issues. The height of the swing arm light in the photograph is a good starting point. The headboard height will really determine where it should be hung. You will have to sit on the bed too to make sure it isn't shining in your eyes.

The base of the wall lamp should be a minimum of 8" from the headboard.

If you want to place fragile things above your bed be sure to use museum glue or even a glue gun so there is no chance of something falling on your head.

If you hang art or a mirror above your bed be sure to use earthquake hangers which securely hold the wire through an "s" channel.

Hanging art is very personal and what is best to remember is the overall shape of a group of art. In a living room if your sofa is low and long I would suggest you hang them low and in a row horizontally. Hang 10" above a sofa so elbows and heads don't hit. Sit in your room and look at the placement and height of the art- it should be easy to see without stretching your neck. Hallways are where people walk so they should be at eye level but not hung by someone 6 ft 6 inches tall!

Mirrors above a fireplace are popular but can be tricky. They should begin 8" above the mantel. If you cannot see yourself in the mirror and only see the ceiling when standing in front of the fireplace I would suggest hanging something else. If it looks too small over the fireplace it is! Now it is possible to angle the mirror down into the room by increasing the length of the wire to the desired pitch but don't angle too much or you will see everyone's feet.

If you want to do a group it is best to lay it out on the floor first. Once you have an arrangement you like you can use sheets of wrapping paper or other long paper on a roll to outline each piece and where to hanger should be. Then just tape the paper on the wall, hammer in the hangers where you marked, remove the paper and hang your art!

Two San Francisco art galleries are presenting landmark exhibitions of paintings by Richard Diebenkorn and Helen Frankenthaler during April, May, and June 2010.

Richard Diebenkorn | Paintings and Drawings from the Collection of Christopher Diebenkorn at the Paul Thiebaud Gallery opens on April 20, 2010 and runs until June 26, 2010.

Instead of the gestural techniques of the Abstract Expressionist and Color Field painting movements of the 1950's, Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) developed a more controlled style, where the geometric lines accumulated during the drawing and painting process remain visible.

In addition to other modern artists and his academic colleagues, Diebenkorn's residential location influenced his work. Here are some highlights from the show, which not only features abstract works from Diebenkorn's earlier Sausalito (1947-1949), Albuquerque (1950-1952), Urbana (1952-1953), and Berkeley (1953-1966) periods, but also from his later Santa Monica (1966-1988), and Healdsburg (1988-1993) periods.

Two San Francisco art galleries are presenting landmark exhibitions of paintings by Helen Frankenthaler and Richard Diebenkorn during April, May, and June 2010.

Helen Frankenthaler | Paintings 1961-1973 at the John Berggruen Gallery opened on April 1, 2010 and runs through May 22, 2010.

Helen Frankenthaler (b.1928), who was influenced by the techniques of Abstract Expressionist painters such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko, led the Color Field painting movement in New York during the 1950's. She developed a gestural painting technique that, by pouring paint over an unprimed instead of a primed canvas, allowed the paint to penetrate and stain the surface.

Here are some highlights from the show, which features rarely exhibited paintings from the collections of the artist and other private collectors.

How to choose the correct natural stone for your project

This is a question that is often asked by homeowners when starting a renovation project. Here is my advice on how to choose the perfect counter top for your project.

The right choice of counter top material depends on whether we're talking about an often-used kitchen or a bathroom. In general, granite is the hardest and most impervious product to choose. Marble and limestone are softer and more porous than granite and will scratch and stain more easily than granite. However, the range of colors and veining of granite is considerably more limited than in a marble slab. Much granite is very uniform and can have the tendency to look like some of the synthetic products on the market today. Beautiful granites are now being quarried in Brazil, so with some perseverance it is possible to achieve beauty, diversity and durability. If you want your counter tops to look brand new, marble or limestone is not for you; stick to granite. But take note that granite should be sealed. (More to come on this later.)

People tend to prefer marble for bathrooms because it comes in a much greater variety of colors and styles. Veining is random and shows the sedimentary formation that occurred millions of years ago. No synthetic product comes close to the exquisite beauty of a unique slab of marble.

Limestone is a classic. It comes in subtle varieties of off-white to cream to beige. Some pieces look like a sandy beach while others have veining. Some limestone tiles are cut so that they are actually three dimensional. This is called "pillowed" limestone; the crown or center is higher than the edges.

If you really want marble or limestone in your kitchen, here are some hints to prevent undesirable markings. Some chemical cleaning products and acids found in foods and drinks (lemons, oranges, coffee, etc.) can etch limestone and marble surfaces. Etching is the erosion of the polished surface. The best way to combat this problem is to hone (pre-etch) the surface and use a good penetrating sealer for stain protection. The proper sealers will help protect the honed surface as well as enhance the natural color and veining in the material, leaving a beautiful surface patina.

Balance is Key to Good Design

Have you ever walked into a room and felt a little uncomfortable, like something is out of place or not quite right? I've found that, as a professional interior designer, one element in a space that is most often missed is a sense of balance.

There are several ways to achieve balance, and all of them are fairly simple. Start by beginning where the professionals begin and measure the dimensions of the room. Be sure to include the ceiling height as well as length and width. These dimensions will help you determine how to plan the room for its function. Even small rooms can be disguised to appear larger.

Next, take a good look at the room and note its focal point. This might include a fireplace, a wonderful view window or some architectural detailing. There may be more than one focal point and any of these provide a good starting point for redesigning the space.

Now rearrange your furniture, starting at the focal point. One mistake many people make is in the size of the pieces of furniture filling your room. At one time there was a trend towards big, overstuffed sofas and lounge chairs. Most look comfortable, and some of them are. But placed in a small sized room, large pieces visually and practically take up too much space, leaving one with a feeling of being confined. To achieve a sense of balance with furniture, purchase very comfortable smaller pieces with smaller arms. Look for tables and storage pieces that work for you and also are better scaled for your room size. You'll be amazed at how much space you really have without changing the actual dimensions of the room.

Other ways to bring balance to a space include the use of color, lighting and especially using architectural moldings. We'll discuss these ideas in future postings. "Stay tuned", and in the meantime please feel free to ask questions about achieving balance in your home.

What to Look For In An Interior Designer

We are often asked what we think you should look for in selecting someone to restyle your home. We have been on many interviews and this is what we have gleaned from them.

Do Your Research
The nine of us recommend that you check the designer thoroughly from their website, their references, and/or from friends' recommendations. Verify their credentials and talk to the references. Find out their talents and consider their strengths and weaknesses.

Understand the Difference Between a Designer and a Decorator
There is a difference between a designer and a decorator. A decorator may have a "flair" for design but does not have the formal training and is not versed on the standards and norms of remodeling a space. They are not aware of the codes that need to be followed for the safety of everyone. A designer, on the other hand, is trained in all areas of construction, building codes and working with the trades. A professional membership in an organization such as the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) insures you are hiring someone with the credentials, knowledge, resources, experience and creativity to make your house into a dream home. We, as professional interior designers, have those credentials.

Are You In Sync?
A designer's portfolio is a good tool to identify their talent and start a conversation about your design tastes and your project. The portfolio should reflect your tastes, not just the designer's own personal style. The only style that really counts is yours.

We are strong believers that the personalities of the client and designer should be in sync. This is the person you are trusting to design your space and they will be a part of your life for a period of time. You must feel you can talk to them about your wants, concerns and desires openly.

Clearly Know Your Budget

Make sure you have a realistic view of how much the project will cost. Ask about fees, markups, and any other hidden costs such as sales tax and freight. If you don't know what things cost, discuss this up front with the designer, who will have a wide range of experience with different types of budgets and projects and can help you determine the cost of the project. It is also important to share the goals for the project in terms of the scope of the work.

Ask For a Contract
The contract should clearly define who is involved, the scope of the work, how services are priced, when payments are due and the responsibilities of all parties. The scope is important because we often come in to interview for one job and it moves to other areas without finishing the first. And, as for responsibilities, you as the client are responsible for hiring all labor.

Team Work
You and your designer are a team in the process and it is a process that doesn't happen overnight. Open communication, clearly defined goals and knowing your budget will ensure a glorious outcome. We want you to be thrilled when we close the door at the end of the project.

Bamboo – This Grass is Green

Bamboo is the fastest growing wood-like plant in the world (botanically, bamboo is a grass, not a tree). It grows one third faster than the fastest growing tree. Some species can grow up to a meter per day -- one can almost watch it grow.

Because it grows so quickly and is easy to regenerate -- either naturally or through replanting -- bamboo is considered the ultimate “rapidly renewable” resource.

Let the Bamboo Buyer Beware!

In the 1990’s, bamboo flooring was considered a novel environmental product and was offered by only a few pioneers. Today, it is a major commodity. There are literally millions of square feet of bamboo flooring flooding into North American ports every month from mills across Eastern and Southeastern Asia.

Some of these bamboo flooring mills are top-notch facilities with excellent quality control and responsible sourcing and labor practices, but others are fly-by night-operations that lack the resources and commitment to produce quality products and see to the safety and health of their workers.

The quality of bamboo flooring is only as good as the quality of the manufacturing and sourcing process. Northern species of bamboo are harder and denser than Southern species; timber bamboo that is harvested at six or seven years of age will perform much better than younger bamboo harvested on shorter rotations; how the bamboo is dried and processed affects product quality; the quality of the adhesives used to glue up the bamboo strips and the quality of the finish used in pre-finished products go a long way to determining whether the product wears well or poorly over time.

Designers who specify bamboo develop relationships with their suppliers. These days cheap bamboo flooring is easy to find, but it is unlikely to hold up in high-traffic applications or to satisfy discerning clients. There is no substitute for expert knowledge in the process of qualifying a supplier. That expertise comes through diligently auditing the quality of bamboo-suppliers' products as installed, especially after some real-world use.

At Design San Francisco 2010, all you needed to do was socialize with the guest speakers---renowned interior designers, furniture designers, and textile designers---at the product launches, and receptions that followed their presentations!

During his presentation 'Doing it Right: 21st Century Style', furniture designer Dakota Jackson explored how, by redefining early 20th century modernism, which he considers the base of 21st century design, he invents new products for today's environment. His furniture, including Calypso, his latest collection, is available at the de Sousa Hughes showroom.

Mark Boone's presentation 'Change Comes Naturally---Organic Forms Take Hold on the California Coast', showcased homes in Big Sur, CA and la Jolla, CA that London Boone, his interior design partnership, transformed into organic, oceanfront oases. Both projects feature custom furniture, as well as furniture from Mimi London, the furniture line that was founded by his partner and is available at the Sloan Miyasato showroom.

During his presentation about 'Thoughtful Design: Evolution vs. Revolution', interior designer Terry Hunziker discussed the importance of design as a long term investment, using past and present images of his projects to show how, even with periodic changes, good design has longevity. Often, his projects feature custom furniture that inspires his furniture designs for Sutherland, available at the Shears & Window showroom.

"When I design a kitchen for my clients, functionality comes first! Understanding the details of the household is key. I spend much time asking questions that uncover client needs and requirements, desires and dreams before even starting to draw. This large island is perfect for making cookies, gathering a crowd, or eating an after school snack. The far cabinets are "lockers" for the childrens' backpacks, coats and chargers. This gracious living room shows off the owners’ personal tastes while offering a comfortable entertaining space.

A cheerful bath was formerly part of a closet and a spare bedroom.

The cabinetmakers meticulously handcrafted all the wooden pulls for this walnut kitchen. All glass cabinetry is illuminated with halogen lights. The ceiling is coffered and illuminated with LED lights.

Lisa's interior design practice is a working process with her clients to create spaces that look and function beautifully. With both residential and commercial projects, each one is unique and the goal is always to bring value and unexpected benefits to her clients.

Architectural detailing is one of Lisa's strengths in her design work. She says "rooms are simply boxes, and the simple addition of architectural details changes the box to a custom space."

In this room the client expressed her love of architectural moldings using highly polished wood. The addition of a coffered ceiling and molding details beautifully incorporates this home office/ library/ wet bar into an elegant yet completely functional space.

The details of the coffered ceiling illustrate how these moldings serve to tie in the custom library unit.
